Did you know?
- DIS' Comprehensive Tuition and Housing Fees are announced 1-2 years before the start of the program to allow you time to budget your stay. Once announced, the fees are guaranteed not to change, except in very extreme circumstances (it has never happened in DIS' over 45 years of existence). Many other study abroad programs' prices are announced very late, are not guaranteed, and can increase without notice or explanation.
- There are no hidden additional costs when attending the DIS program! All expenses covered by the Comprehensive Tuition and Housing Fees are clearly delineated (see below), as are any program-related optional expenses. Thus, after paying all program fees prior to arrival, you can safely and accurately budget your stay in Europe without any financial surprises.
- In spite of the sharp drop in the US dollar's value since 2001, DIS has been able to keep any price increases to a minimum. Why? DIS receives financial assistance from the Danish Government through a line item in the Danish national budget to subsidize your studying abroad with DIS.
Below you will find complete information regarding tuition, fees and other financial matters at DIS

You are welcome to arrange your own housing in Copenhagen. In this case you pay neither the Comprehensive Housing Fee nor the refundable damage deposit.
DIS cannot assist with rent payments, deposits, furnishings, bedding, etc. But we do offer some advice and also post various room/apartment offers on DIS Forum (an intranet for accepted DIS students). For DIS Forum access please click here. Note that your local transportation costs are not included when choosing independent housing.
The deadline for switching from DIS-arranged housing to self-arranged housing is one month prior to arrival. If you switch after this deadline, a cancellation fee of US$ 100 plus additional direct costs associated with the housing change will be applied.

Program Change Fee
Making any changes to your primary program of attendance within 30 days of the program start date will result in a charge of US $150. This amount will go toward covering the costs associated with changing study tour travel arrangements. Prior to this, you are welcome to change your primary DIS program at no charge as long as you meet the specific requirements associated with that program choice. This policy only applies to changing the primary program and its associated core course(s), and does not apply to standard course changes which are allowed any time until the drop/add period is over.
School of Record Fee
DIS issues a Final Grade Report to the student after completion of the term of attendance. Your home institution determines whether credits from DIS will be accepted directly, or whether an official transcript from a United States accredited institution is needed. If this is the case, the University of Minnesota will act as the School of Record and provide an official transcript for an additional fee of US$ 300 . This amount will be added to your invoice.
Please check with your home institution as to whether a Final Grade Report from DIS is acceptable, or if an official transcript from the University of Minnesota is needed for you to receive class credit. This must be arranged prior to the beginning of the semester as part of the registration process.
Final Grade Reports and/or University of Minnesota official transcripts will only be issued if all fees have been paid to DIS and there are no academic or administrative holds on your record.

Personal Expenses
Based on the current rate of exchange, the cost of living in Denmark is slightly higher than in the US. Excluding food, former students have reported spending approximately $600 a month on average. This figure should be reduced or increased based on your own spending habits, but you should also budget for travel in Europe and for one meal per day during study tours.
Program Deposit
Your place in the program is not ensured until a US $500 non-refundable program deposit has been paid to DIS on your behalf. If you aren't certain whether you pay the deposit or whether your school pays for it, please check with your study abroad advisor or contact the North American Office at 1-800-247-3477 or dis@umn.edu Your classes, housing, study tours, etc., will not be confirmed until this deposit is received. This deposit will be deducted from the invoice issued to you or to the institution that issues payment for you.
