Choose the Folkehøjskole Option
Imagine living on the rural campus of a small liberal arts college with a student body of about 40-100, and you will better understand life at a Folkehøjskole. A Folkehøjskole is for young Danes and young foreigners from all over the world between the ages of 19-25 who live at the school and participate in a wide spectrum of courses and extracurricular activities. The idea is to become ‘educated for life,’ and Danish and international students attending a Folkehøjskole do not take any exams. The unique Danish tradition of the Folkehøjskole dates back more than 150 years, and DIS students tend to love the social atmosphere! The Folkehøjskole option receives very high student evaluations every semester.
At the højskole, you will be part of a mandatory dinner meal plan during weekdays, covered by your food stipend. The commute is up to 70-80 minutes, but the Folkehøjskole is located in fantastic rural scenery or in another beautiful city, which you will have time to discover with both DIS students and the Danish students living there.
The Folkehøjskole is right for you if:
- You are independent, self-reliant and outgoing
- You are interested in a unique cross-cultural experience and eager to socialize with other Danish and international Folkehøjskole students
- You want to take part in the dinner meal plan
- You are willing to commute
Note! The number of rooms in the Folkehøjskole is limited and rooms will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

You will be part of a mandatory dinner meal plan covered by your food stipend, i.e. every night at 6 PM you will be dining alongside the rest of the Folkehøjskole. This is easy work and something all residents at the Folkehøjskole are inclined to take part in. The meal plan will not be in effect during the three week travel break.
