Reading Ribe: Denmark's Oldest Town
Weekend trip. Fall and spring: US$ 225
Open to all students. Limited space.
Ribe [Reebe] is Denmark’s oldest town. It was founded around 700 AD, grew to become a bishopric in the 10th century and a major commercial center in the Middle Ages, flourished in the 17th century – and then stagnated. Hence, it is one of Denmark’s best-preserved towns, with a medieval street pattern, a monumental cathedral, and tons of old-world charm.
This academic adventure trip actually includes learning. But it’s going to be really interesting and, well… an adventure! You will explore “the city in Northern Europe” – its emergence, development and chief characteristics. And you will learn how to “read” a city and make sense of the urban fabric.
Who founded Ribe? What were the Vikings doing in the process? Who were the Dominicans? What was a cathedral? How do you distinguish Romanesque from Gothic? Why are medieval streets winding? What changed with the arrival of the railroad? These are just some of the fascinating topics you will be exploring on this trip.
Mind you: You will do the exploration, however, under the guidance of a DIS professor. That’s why it is an adventure trip. You will do guided on-site map exercises, architectural styles analyses, historic scavenger hunts, get background information and join some guided visits. Plus we will enjoy a night on town.
The price includes: bus transfers, 2 x nights at hostel in Ribe, 2 x breakfasts, 1 x dinner, 2 x lunch as well as entrance fees, guides and information materials.
