Academic Quality: A Serious Semester with DIS

There is no official rank of study abroad programs in terms of both academic and non-academic areas, however, DIS has a long-standing reputation as a high-quality study abroad program in both areas. Top academic quality is a key feature at DIS, and is something that makes credit transfer back to a student’s university in the US easy, so that study abroad can be integrated into their degree program and graduation should not be delayed. DIS students are high achieving and academically focused, with the vast majority hailing from the most selective universities and colleges in the US.

Our faculty, administrators, staff and students are all engaged in a constant feedback loop through which student impressions, successes and concerns are communicated to the program’s decision-makers – and acted upon.

Leadership Skill Development

DIS focuses on skill development aimed towards a progressively more globalized job market. A key element in this is the concept of cultural acquisition, where the twin facets of global citizenship and leadership training are heightened through interactive course work in decision-making and structured argumentation. Multicultural and cross-disciplinary communication proficiencies are developed as the large questions and burning issues of our time are contested and discussed. This aspect aims to help students become informed decision makers with the skill to present solid arguments and support them with well-defined logic and analysis.

A Good Investment

DIS’ reputation as a high-quality institution is based on academic quality, but also a significant amount of additional elements present in the programs. As well as top-quality academic courses, students get high-impact learning through course-integrated and optional study tours. Additionally, supervised hands-on application of classroom theory is progressively being incorporated into DIS courses. Students experience what they have learned in real circumstances, thus reinforcing the theory they have been exposed to. A number of cultural immersion programs, including a networking option, sports groups, and volunteering programs are also available.

Issues of Safety

Student safety is and has always been of primary concern to DIS. All staff members are service-minded, and are ready to handle questions or problems from individual students or from parents. DIS operates 24-hour emergency contact numbers in Denmark and the US, which is accessible globally (for more info visit Health & Safety).

DIS Student Services

DIS services begin in the US and continue when students arrive in Denmark. The DIS North American Office is there to assist students in registering for courses, selecting the most suitable housing option, advising on flights to/from Denmark, and other pre-departure help.
On arrival in Copenhagen, the large DIS on-site staff members are on hand to help students, providing a broad array of services ranging from personal and academic counseling to sending mail and internet access and much more besides.

Study Abroad Experience

Study abroad is a unique experience. Studying abroad at DIS merges concentrated learning with a broad range of new experiences that develop the student as an individual, frequently leading to a personal evolution, and increased ownership and maturity. DIS provides faculty-led, credit-bearing study tours and optional study tours, adventure and day trips in order that students discover Europe in the best possible way. An elective course of Danish Language & Culture is taken by around 65 percent of all students, and offers a great opportunity to experience Denmark and Europe in a personal and deep way.

DIS augments its academic program, providing housing options and cultural programs that help students come away from their student abroad period with extra cultural experiences and perspectives that extend their horizons and cultivate personal development and growth.

The DIS faculty are simply outstanding: a cadre of very qualified professionals who have both a natural talent and passion for teaching. What DIS has succeeded in creating is in essence a Danish University that is par with any teaching institution in the States.
