Please register for workshop housing no later than February 15, 2012.

Self-arranged Housing | Rented Room in Copenhagen | Danish Host Family Stay

Self-arranged Housing

DIS is located in the heart of Copenhagen, along the central walking street (Strøget). We are a five minute walk from city hall square (Rådhuspladsen), a 10 minute walk from Tivoli and a 20 minute walk from Kongens Nytorv (Kings Square). Use these landmarks to book accommodations at hotels.com or similar websites, which are often cheaper and more convenient (e.g. English language, dollar amounts) than booking directly with a hotel.

Rented Room in Copenhagen (DIS arranged)

Fee: $100 per night. $120 per night with guest

Rented rooms are Denmark’s version of Bed & Breakfasts, but are quite different from their American counterparts. Your room will typically be one bedroom of a large, lovely apartment whose owners also live there. There may be another workshop participant staying at the same location. Past participants have really enjoyed getting to know the Danish hosts, but be aware the hosts won't be around all the time, and the service level is not hotel-like (i.e. you must provide your own toiletries). Breakfast is included in the price, but in most cases is self-service. You may be sharing a bathroom with another workshop participant or with your host. This option may or may not offer phone or internet access, but computers/internet are available at DIS throughout the week. Lastly, most rented rooms are located one or more stories up, and elevators are not common.

A rented room contains elements of both hotel and host family, and is recommended if you want to be in the city, require less privacy than a hotel, and would like some interaction with a Danish host. Rooms are generally located within a 25 minute walk from DIS, but a few require a short bus, train, or metro ride. Please list any allergies (e.g. food, pets, etc.) in your workshop registration so we may accommodate your needs.

Danish Host Family Stay (DIS arranged)

Fee: $300 per person (maximum 2 people per family)

The host family stay is the most popular housing option at DIS, providing a great introduction to Danish culture. Most families, as in U.S. cities, live in the suburbs and not in the city centre and you will travel daily with Copenhagen's public transit system up to 60 minutes each way using a transportation pass provided to you by DIS. The family stay option has a limit of six nights. Read more about DIS host families here.

Breakfasts and some dinners are included. Please list any allergies (e.g. food, pets, etc.) in your workshop registration so we may accommodate your needs.

Host Family Gift: Participants selecting the family stay often ask what to bring from the U.S. for their host family. A small gift is a nice gesture, but by no means obligatory. Some suggestions include a token from your state (e.g. food, chocolates, book, college hat or t-shirt, bottle of liquor or wine from your home region). It is also a good idea to bring a few photographs of your family—your host family will be curious!
