President Obama will travel to Copenhagen this week to help make a big push for Chicago’s 2016 Olympic bid. He will be joined by First Lady Michelle Obama in this first time appearance by a U.S. president at an IOC meeting. Obama also plans to visit with Queen Margrethe II and her husband, Prince Henrik along with Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen. The vote for deciding between Chicago, Madrid, Spain; Tokyo, Japan; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil will occur this Friday October 2, 2009 and the announcement will be made from the City Hall Sqaure, Rådhuspladsen, just a city block from DIS. No public appearances in Copenhagen have been announced at this time, but the White House has said that Obama plans to arrive Thursday night and leave Friday evening.
Current DIS students interested in helping in the 2016 Chicago Bid should check out their website www.chicago2016.org. There are 3 events they are still looking for Volunteers for:
-City Bike Tour: On Thursday afternoon, 40 volunteers are needed to help supporters with bike check-out and fitting. Other volunteers will be assigned to ride along on the bike tour, assisting the guide in keeping the group together and on the route.
-Harbor Party at the Danish Royal Playhouse: On Thursday evening, the Chicago 2016 Supporters will be gathering at the Danish Royal Playhouse for a welcome reception. During the evening, The Chicago 2016 Bid Team and guests will gather on the deck of the Playhouse to show their support for Chicago as the International Olympic Committee (IOC) members travel via boat to the Royal Opera House for their opening reception. For this event, volunteers will be needed to act as greeters and way finders for the guests. In addition, the volunteers will join the cheering party on the deck to welcome and cheer the IOC. Approximately 50 volunteers are needed for this activity.
-Host City Decision at City Hall: For this event, volunteers are invited to come to City Hall Square wearing Chicago 2016 gear to show their support for America’s bid city and to enjoy all the festivities. Approximately 100 volunteers are needed for this activity. Volunteers will collect their Chicago 2016 t-shirts at the DIS before heading out to City Hall Square to enjoy the festivities! Festivities go on all day, but volunteers are welcome to come & go as their schedules allow.
