What better way to get to know a new culture and community than through a camera lens? American students studying at Denmark’s Institute for Study Abroad (DIS) have been learning about photojournalism and how to use photography to capture a story. The students have studied and applied the principles of a three picture story in photojournalism to depict the story of a member of the Danish community that the students have met since moving to Copenhagen.

At six different times throughout their semester, these students visited their subjects and photographed them in different contexts. Students were instructed to photograph the essence of the environment in which the subjects live, work and interact with another people.

The DIS students have jumped into the Danish culture by establishing a relationship with their subjects and developing an understanding of their subjects’ stories. On Friday, December 10, the students will display their final three photographs along with the accompanying story synopsis.

The photography exhibition will be held on Friday, December 10th 17.00-19.00 at Vestergade23 second floor lounge.

Extra Info: Anders Clausen, professor of photojournalism at DIS, earned a BA in Anthropology from the University of Copenhagen in 2004. He received his B\Tec HND in Documentary Photography from Gwent College of Higher Education in the United Kingdom in 1991. Anders has been working as a freelance photographer since 1995. Anders has used his education and knowledge from working as a freelancer to instruct DIS students on the creation of a three picture journalistic story.
