August 27, 2010
Activities
A vivid and extreme landscape provides the setting for a wide variety of Greenlandic excursions such as a musk ox safari, snow scootering, exploring the Russell glacier and the Greenland Ice Sheet – while if you are lucky, you might get the chance to observe the beautiful and rare Aurora Borealis.
Lodging & Food
You will stay at the Old Camp, 2 km from in Kangerlussuaq Airport, beautifully placed between Mount Hassel and Søndre Strømfjord with a view out onto Lake Ferguson and the mountains along the Fjord towards Sisimiut. All meals are provided, and one evening you will be treated to traditional Greenlandic food with your fellow classmates.
Lectures & Study
Both during the seminar in Copenhagen and while in Greenland, you will receive various lectures from field researchers and your faculty on the biology, history and climate of Greenland. The course study plan will culminate in a Kangerlussuaq Awareness Test that you will have time to work on during the trip in Kangerlussuaq.
Objectives of the Tour
Arctic societies are at the crux of climate change issues. The Greenlandic landscapes of ice and snow are incredibly fragile and important for current research. Students will get sufficient background knowledge of the climate issues, history, politics and geology in class before personally exploring Greenland.
