DIS Climate Change Seminar Series

Back by popular demand for Spring 2012!

Students interested in sustainability & environmental issues are encouraged to attend the DIS Climate Seminar Series. This is an evening seminar series that will take place on Wednesdays at Studenterhuset (right next to the Round Tower) and will bring national and international experts to speak on different issues related to climate change. The seminars are free to attend and are followed by a reception with organic wine, Nordic cheeses, and local organic fruit. Spring 2012 Climate Seminars:

Wednesday, February 1: Copenhagenization
How did Copenhagen become such a green city, and what plans is the city making to become even more sustainable? Hear from urban planning experts about how cities around the world are modeling Danish urban regeneration schemes and learn how Copenhagen became such a bike-friendly city. Speakers include Zofia Jagielska from the Municipality of Copenhagen and Troels Andersen from the Danish Cycling Embassy.

Wednesday, February 8: Energy in Urban Life
How urgent is the global climate change problem, and can Denmark really eliminate its use of fossil fuels? Hear from representatives from both NIRAS and the Copenhagen Municipality about how Copenhagen was able to change behaviors in an urban setting to deal with the climate change issue.

Wednesday, February 15: Energy in Developed and Developing Countries
What is the difference between alternative energy development in developed and developing worlds? Hear about different projects happening in developing countries and how the projects have helped with development.

Wednesday, March 28: CleanTech and Sustainable Business Opportunities
Hear from experts in the fields of clean tech and corporate social responsibility.  What are the incentives for businesses to market themselves as green corporations? How easy is it to make normal business practices more sustainable and still make a profit?

Fall 2011 Climate Seminars included:

1) Copenhagenisation

How did Copenhagen become such a green city, and what plans is the city making to become even more sustainable? Hear from urban planning experts about urban planning in Copenhagen and how cities around the world are modeling Danish urban regeneration schemes.

2) Climate Trends and Long-Term Strategies

How urgent is the global climate change problem, and can Denmark really eliminate its use of fossil fuels? Katherine Richardson is the head of the Danish Government’s 27th Climate Commission, and she is one of the world’s leading experts on climate change.

3) Clean Tech and CSR Business Development

Hear from experts in the fields of clean tech and corporate social responsibility.  What are the incentives for businesses to market themselves as green corporations? How easy is it to make normal business practices more sustainable and still make profit? One speaker, Nils Thorsen, works with clean tech at Nils & Young.

4) Environment and the European Union

Hear from Mikael Skou Andersen from the European Environment Agency (EEA). Mikael is an EEA project manager working on environmental economics and policies.
