Pre-Departure & Arrival
The Pre-departure Packet, sent to students one or two months proir to the start of term, contains arrival and orientation information, a student handbook, a parent handout, emergency contact information and other documents that will help students prepare, pack, and set expectations for their upcoming time abroad. We strongly encourage students to read the student handbook and other information provided.
Housing Information
Students can expect to receive their Danish address approximately 10 days prior to departure, by e-mail directly from the Housing & Student Services office. Students are also welcome to call the DIS North American Office for housing information one week prior to departure. Click here for more housing information.
Arrival in Copenhagen
DIS staff will meet students arriving before 3pm on the official arrival day in the baggage claim area and arrival area of the Copenhagen airport, and the staff and students will go together to the registration site by bus.
Students arriving later than 3pm on the official arrival day will receive specific instructions via e-mail approximately one week prior to departure day. These students will typically have to take a taxi or public transportation (at their own expense) to the registration site or directly to their housing.
Those students arriving prior to the official arrival day (see calendar here) will be responsible for their own accommodations (recommendations are listed on DIS Forum) and for making their way to the registration site on arrival day. Students arriving early will also receive an email with more specific instructions.
First Evening
On the first evening, students living with a host family or Danish roommate are picked up by their hosts. DIS staff will introduce families, roommates and students to one another, and then it’s time to eat and get settled. Kollegium, Danish Folkehøjskole and DIS Residential Community students are taken by bus to their new homes to get settled and have a DIS-sponsored dinner and orientation meeting.
All students that arrive by 3pm on the official arrival day are assisted in getting their local transportation pass and becoming familiar with Copenhagen and its city streets, and bus, train, and metro transportation routes. By the end of the Arrival Workshop, students have a general understanding of the public transportation system and their daily commute to and from their housing to the DIS building in downtown Copenhagen.
