Religious Groups in Denmark

The official religion of Denmark, as stated in the Danish Constitution, is Evangelical Lutheran. Approximately 85% of the Danish population is Evangelical Lutheran, 3% are Roman Catholic and approximately 4% of the population is Muslim.

For students interested in practicing their faith while in Denmark, there is information available both on the DIS Forum, and in the Housing and Student Services Office in Copenhagen. Also, representatives from various religious groups are invited to the Immerse Yourself Fair where students are able to reach out to religious communities within the first days of being in Copenhagen.

As an Orthodox Jew, my religious observance affects my everyday activities. I knew that this would pose a much larger challenge, and I was nervous. Would I able to find food that I could eat? What would I do about a kitchen? How would I be able to celebrate the holidays that mark the fall calendar? I had never spent Rosh HaShannah, the Jewish New Year, away from home before. With the High Holidays rapidly approaching, I wanted to make sure that I would be able to celebrate even though I was thousands of miles away from my family. I discovered that there would be a community with which I could celebrate holidays, as well as a warm and welcoming group of people with whom I share a culture. I felt at home with them immediately, and I could not be more thankful for this contact. By taking initiative, reaching out, and building connections with the Jewish community in Denmark, I felt at home and extremely comfortable very quickly.
