DIS in Copenhagen
Study Abroad in the Heart of Copenhagen
DIS is located on Vestergade in the very heart of central Copenhagen. DIS’ Copenhagen city location consists of two historic buildings from 1798 as well as one adjacent classroom building. It is located in the center of medieval Copenhagen –only two minutes’ walk from City Hall Square and the central pedestrian and shopping street, Strøget. With the city literally at the doorstep, students can immediately explore the winding streets and soak in the atmosphere of downtown Copenhagen between or after classes.
At DIS, you will find a full range of modern facilities, detailed further down this page. The condensed downtown location means that even though DIS is situated in a big city, you don’t have to travel between facilities and classes. DIS, however, is not a university campus, so coffee shops, fitness centers, and so forth are provided by the surrounding city streets.
Copenhagen, the Center of Denmark
As the capital of Denmark, Copenhagen is home to most national Danish institutions. Within a short walk from DIS you will find the main universities and research libraries in the country; parliament, government, and European Union agencies; renowned art collections; the national research hospital; the Royal Ballet and Opera; the national media; and the headquarters of many prestigious international companies.
DIS utilizes all the surrounding resources, with the majority of DIS classes including field studies in and around Copenhagen and Denmark. A few examples of this are: Architecture & Design – analyzing examples of ground-breaking modern Scandinavian architecture; Criminology and Criminal Justice in Scandinavia – on-site discussions with prison inmates; Children with Special Needs – a visit to a crisis intervention center for at risk children; European Business Strategy – a Scandinavian Airlines presentation; History of European Ballet – viewing performances of the Royal Danish Ballet; Human Trafficking – talking with social workers at street level; and much, much more.
DIS Facilities
In the main DIS buildings, you will find modern, well-equipped classrooms, a library, student areas, computer labs and studios. The study and reference library is located in the DIS building on Vestergade. It is open 92 hours a week and has approximately 12,000 books, over 100 international journals and around 600 films in English, or with English subtitles, all related to the academic areas covered by the DIS curriculum. DIS students also enjoy access to the most important external libraries in Copenhagen.
DIS maintains five student computer labs which have the same opening hours as the library, typically from 9am - 9pm on weekdays and 11am - 9pm on weekends. WiFi internet access is also available in the main DIS buildings. All computer labs contain at least one printer and/or copier.
