What should I bring to Denmark to connect my laptop to the internet at the Kollegium and/or at DIS?
Be sure to bring all cables and adapters required to plug into an Ethernet port. Also remember that Denmark runs on 230 volts as opposed to 110 volts as in the U.S. and while a power converter may not be necessary, you will need a round-pronged adapter for Danish electrical outlets. The plug adapters can be purchased cheaply in Denmark if you are unsure of what to buy.
Is there anything I should do to my laptop before arriving in Denmark?
Backup! We encourage students to bring external hard drives to continuously backup their data just in case anything happens. We also recommend that students bring any installation CDs with them just in case a reinstall of a system is necessary. The IT Help Desk can help student with backing up and reinstalling if this becomes necessary.
Where is the IT Help Desk?
The IT Help Desk is located on the ground floor of Vestergade 5. It is the first office when entering the Vestergade 5 entrance. If you are using the main entrance, you have to go up two floors, turn right at the top of the stairs (walking over the courtyard), walk to the next staircase, and then go down one floor.

The IT Services Department is open from 10am to 4pm, Monday through Friday. The student computer labs are open when the library is open, typically 9am to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 9pm on weekends, with extended hours during final exams. The computer labs located in Vestergade 10 (A31 and B35) are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Where are the Student Computer Labs located?
Student computer labs are located in Vestergade 7 in the library, the periodical room, and the basement, and in Vestergade 10 in rooms A31 and B35. In addition, there are laptops and printers located in places where student congregate.

Does DIS have a color printer?
Yes, all labs are equipped with at least 2 color laser printers and one multi-function color copier.
Is there student access to a scanner?
The multi-function copiers have scanning and copying capabilities. In addition, there are eight stand-alone A3 scanners in the Vestergade 10 B35 computer lab and four A4 scanners in A31 Lab.
How much space am I allowed on the Main Server?
DIS allows students a maximum of 100 MB (megabytes) in their student folder. AD students are allowed up to 500 MB. Students exceeding this limit will be required to remove their files from the server. MP3s and exe files are not allowed to be stored on the DIS server and will be removed immediately upon their detection.
Can I get the files in my student folder burned on a CD?
Absolutely. In fact we encourage students whose folders exceed 100 MB (or 500 MB for AD Students) to burn a CD. CDs are available for purchase from the front desk and CD-R/RW equipped computers are located throughout DIS.
How much do CDRs/DVDRs cost and where can I buy them?
DIS sells CDRs for 5 kroner and DVDRs for 10 kroner. These can all be purchased at the IT Help desk of the DIS building.
What do I do if I am not receiving "all student" or other group e-mails from DIS?
If you have notified the North American Office (dis@umn.edu) of your e-mail address prior to coming to Copenhagen, but are still not receiving e-mail from DIS try checking your "Junk Mail" folder in Hotmail or other web-based e-mail account. Often e-mails will be filtered out, especially by Hotmail. If you are still having problems come to the IT Help Desk and we will help you get it straightened out.
How do I connect to the internet from my Kollegium?
Almost all Kollegiums now have "Ethernet" access to the Internet. In order to connect at your Kollegium you must create an account at the Kollegium. This cannot be done until you arrive in Denmark and is completely independent of the DIS IT Services Department.
Does the IT Services Department need my e-mail address? Where do I send it?
We ask that you e-mail the address you intend to use to the North American Office dis@umn.edu before the start of the semester.
