Cell Phone Service
Cell Phone Options While in Denmark
Since DIS is first and foremost committed to student safety, security and convenience, it is obligatory that you have a cell phone while enrolled in our program. To assist you, a list of several cell phone service providers is described below. Although, please note, DIS is completely separate from these companies and students are encouraged to choose a phone plan based on their individual needs and wants. Finding the cheapest option will depend mostly on your individual usage habits—for example, do you mostly send text messages, do you talk to the same five people, or do you call abroad often? Take the time to explore your options and choose which one fits you best.
- PicCell Wireless:
PicCell Wireless provides a free phone rental of an A+ unlocked tri-band phone and a phone number, a charger, and Danish SIM card for the length of time that you choose. You can also purchase a Euro SIM that will work while you travel in other countries. The phone will be equipped with an alarm clock, voicemail, text messaging, call waiting and caller I.D. PicCell phones are the ones most commonly used by DIS Students. Read more information about the PicCell plan for DIS students on our site here, and then visit www.piccellwireless.com/dis for more information on the DIS deal.
- Lebara:
With Lebara you can order a free SIM card, but you will use your own phone. There are several options with Lebara. You can choose the pay as you go system, with no monthly fees, no contract and no credit check. With this option, you will buy “top up” cards as you need them. You can also choose the automatic top-up option, which will pull directly from your bank account. This option will provide you with the cheapest rates, including for international calls. But please note, Lebara SIM cards do not work outside of Denmark. For more information, visit their website at www.lebara.dk.
- CBB Mobile:
CBB offers two different options as well. You can buy a CBB start package at local grocery stores, which you will need to “top up.” In this case, you would use your own phone. Once you register with local authorities and get a Danish CPR number, you can sign up for one of their monthly packages. All packages include free SMS & MMS and certain amount of data for smart phone use. They range from 99-199* kroner a month. Please note, CBB SIM cards do not work outside of Denmark. Check out more on their site, www.cbb.dk.
- Oister:
Oister is a company geared toward smart phone users. An Oister SIM can be purchased online with a talk time, free SMS & MMS, and a data plan for about 99-199* kroner per month. Please note, signing up with Oister requires a Danish CPR number, which you will not get until about several weeks after your arrival. Please note, Oister SIM cards do not work outside of Denmark. See more information on http://www.oister.dk/Mobil/.
- Other cell phone companies include:
Telmore (https://www.telmore.dk)
BiBob (https://www.bibob.dk)
Telia (http://telia.dk)
Telenor (www.telenor.dk)
*Please note: Cell phone companies are constantly evolving their products and services, and DIS cannot take responsibility for these changes. DIS cannot offer any further assistance in regards to student cell phones.
*ATTENTION SUMMER STUDENTS: You will not be getting a CPR number, therefore your best option is to go with PicCell or Lebara, both of which don’t require a CPR number for sign up.
Information about Bringing American Cell Phones to Denmark
- An iPhone or Blackberry phone must be unlocked before a Danish SIM card will work
- Smart phones can be unlocked by either using software purchased over the internet or at a technology store that performs the service for you at a charge. This can cost around $40 USD and you should contact your local AT&T, Verizon, etc. store and ask for recommendations.
- The DIS IT department can NOT assist students with unlocking their phones.
- Once a Smart phone is unlocked, it cannot be updated or it will return to the locked state. A phone will typically request to update with the latest version when plugged into computer to sync iTunes-be sure to decline updates.
