Summer Housing
Housing during Summer Study Abroad
DIS guarantees housing to all students who request (and have paid for) DIS-arranged housing. The deadline for requesting summer housing is one month before the arrival date, but the sooner you sign up for housing the better. During the summer, Kollegium and DIS Residential Communities are the two housing options – whether you’re enrolling in an early summer course or two (for three or six weeks), or a late summer program. However, if these two housing options reach capacity, students may be offered a Danish Roommate or a Host Family. Once you’ve been admitted to DIS and are registering online for your summer abroad, you will have an opportunity to express interest in one of these alternative options.
DIS Residential Community
Live with other DIS students in a DIS housing facility. The facilities are all relatively centrally located and furnished. The sizes vary and two or more students often share a room. You will either share a kitchenette and a bathroom with your roommates, or share a common kitchen and bathrooms with fellow DIS students living in the same building. You will experience a great social life connected to your academic environment. More on DIS Residential Communities.
Kollegium
Kollegium housing offers many exciting and different ways of living close to Danes and other international students. A kollegium is the Danish equivalent of an American residence hall or dormitory model – but there are some significant differences. As European universities usually do not have campuses, the rooms in the different kollegiums used by DIS are shared between many Danish universities and colleges, thus allowing you to meet a variety of students from many disciplines and backgrounds.
Something to keep in mind is that Danish students tend to be older that the typical American college student. It is normal in Denmark to be in your late 20’s or early 30’s and still be in school. Second, kollegiums are not operated by universities or colleges – they are free standing organizations. This means that they are not located on campuses, but rather outside the city center area. Please also note that all of our kollegiums are co-ed. You will never share a room (if you live in a double room) with someone of the opposite gender, but in some of the kollegiums you will share the bathroom and you will always live in co-ed halls.
Living in a kollegium provides opportunity for social events and informal get-together’s with other residents. The population of the kollegiums varies. In some kollegiums the majority of the residents are Danish students; in others it’s international students. In some kollegiums you will be the only DIS student on your hall, where in others there will be other DIS students living around you. You will either share the kitchen with 10-20 other residents or have a kitchenette in your room and will typically have your own room, or a double room that you share with another DIS student. In most kollegiums you will have your own bathroom, but in some you will share the bathroom with another resident.
During the summer time some students go home to their families, so you can experience that some kollegiums have less people around. More on Kollegium.
Practicalities
Summer students live in DIS housing while in Copenhagen, and in hotels and hostels while on study tours. Early summer six-week students will keep the same room for Sessions 1 and 2. Read more about the DIS Housing Policy.
Share an evening with a Danish Family
Grab this unique opportunity to get an insight in Danish family traditions and values. You’ll spend a day or an evening with a Danish family, and if you both have time for it, you might share even more experiences together. You can sign up for a visiting family as a part of DIS' Online Registration process after acceptance into the program. Please note, if we are unable to place you with a Danish family, you will of course be placed on a waiting list.
Food Stipend
Not intended to cover your full food costs, food stipends* will be given in the following amounts to summer students:
- Early Summer Students - Session 1 OR Session 2: $100
- Early Summer Students - Sessions 1 & 2 (6 weeks): $200
- Late Summer Students - all Architecture & Design: $200
