Summer Study Abroad Courses at DIS
Summer Study Abroad Structure
DIS offers a range of summer courses of varying lengths and structures, and many include a study tour to a destination in Denmark or Europe. Below is an explanation of how summer study abroad is organized by DIS.
Early Summer Courses: Seventeen of the DIS summer courses, each worth three credits, run in two consecutive three-week sessions. Students are invited to choose one or two of these courses (granted that each one is in a different session).
Architecture & Design: For students interested in Architecture & Design, Furniture or Textile Design in Scandinavia, the program comes as a comprehensive package offering nine credits; six credits for studio and three credits for the corresponding lecture course. In summer, these courses usually run from late June to mid-August.
More on Early Summer Courses
DIS offers 25 three-week, three-credit courses within a variety of academic fields across Sessions 1 & 2. You can choose to enroll in one course for three credits, either in Session 1 or Session 2 or you can enroll in two courses for six credits, one in Session 1 and one in Session 2.
In Session 1, there are no study tours, but rather field studies around course-related destinations in Copenhagen (see below). In Session 2, the courses include a five-day study tour in Europe. This explains the price difference between Session 1 and Session 2.
If you choose to combine a Session 1 and a Session 2 courses for a total of six weeks/six credits, DIS offers a combination-discount of $570.
You can combine any two different courses from Sessions 1 & 2, allowing you to focus within the same academic field or to diversify. Some courses are offered in Sessions 1 & 2 and cannot be taken in both. (Technically it is also possible to choose a course from Session 1 and an Architecture & Design course as there is no time overlap.)
Academic Field Studies
Most DIS courses include course-integrated field studies that connect the classroom to organizations, institutions, sites, and/or persons that are relevant to the course topic. DIS makes use of the rich resources of Copenhagen for field visits to companies, galleries, parliament, TV stations, urban development projects, museums, and more. Field studies are typically a half-day excursion, tied to one or more class assignments.
The field studies are complemented by the frequent use of guest lecturers from academia and the world of politics, government and the professions, adding up to a rich, comprehensive and site-specific academic experience.
