Summer Study Abroad Courses at DIS
Summer Study Abroad Structure
DIS offers a range of summer courses of varying lengths and structures, each with its own study tour to a destination in Denmark or Europe. Below is an explanation of how summer study abroad is organized by DIS.
Early Summer Courses: Seventeen of the DIS summer courses, each worth three credits, run in two three-week consecutive sessions. Students are invited to choose one or two of these courses (granted that each one is in a different session).
Architecture & Design: For students interested in Architecture & Design, Furniture or Textile Design in Scandinavia, a single seven-week nine credit course runs through the summer. In summer, these courses usually run from late June to mid-August.
More on Early Summer Courses
As mentioned above, during summer 2011, DIS offers 17 three-credit courses within a variety of academic fields. The courses are offered in two consecutive sessions, 9 in Session 1 (May 22 - June 10), and 8 in Session 2 (June 13 - July 1).
In Session 1, there are no study tours, but rather field studies around course-related destinations in Copenhagen (see below). In Session 2, the courses include a five-day study tour in Scandinavia or Europe. (European Business Strategy has a five-day tour in both sessions). This explains the price difference between Session 1 and Session 2.
Some courses are offered in both sessions, i.e. Human Health and Disease and Public Health in Northern Europe. Other courses form a thematic sequence, for instance, the Sustainability courses (though it is not necessary to choose courses in this manner).
You can choose to enroll in one course for three credits, either in Session 1 or Session 2. Or you can enroll in two courses for six credits, one in Session 1 and one in Session 2. Most summer students choose the six-credit option.
Please note that you are free to combine any two courses from Sessions 1 and 2. You can take both courses within one and the same academic field, but are also free to diversify. (Technically it is also possible to choose a course from Session 1 and an Architecture & Design course as there is no time overlap.)
Academic Field Studies
Most DIS courses include course-integrated field studies that connect the classroom to organizations, institutions, sites, and/or persons that are relevant to the course topic. Most courses at DIS make use of the rich resources of Copenhagen for field visits to companies, galleries, parliament, TV stations, urban development projects, museums, and more. Field studies are typically a half-day excursion, tied to one or more class assignments. Normally, each course has one or two a semester.
The field studies are complemented by the frequent use of guest lecturers from academia and the world of politics, government and the professions, adding up to a rich, comprehensive and site-specific academic experience.
