Description

The study tour to (Stockholm) and Finland (Helsinki) visits textile manufacturers, museums, and contemporary and older architecture where textiles are strongly integrated into the interior design. Furthermore, the tour gives students an impression of Scandinavian history, geography, and culture. The sites on tour are sensory experiences, allowing students to develop their critical observation skills and diagrammatic and representational proficiency.

Students are required to sketch in their journals and are expected to develop initial concepts for their textile designs. In their sketchbooks, students create physical and conceptual expressions of textiles seen on tour, looking at each example’s intended function as well as its relation to light, architecture, furniture or fashion. The manufacturing process and designers encountered on tour are also points of inspiration.
