Housing Options
Welcome to the housing department at DIS!
Housing and Cultural Immersion
Housing options are a key element in your interaction with Danish culture and society and that is the main reason so many unique housing experiences are offered, with a host family stay offering the most benefits in this regard.
DIS guarantees housing to all students who request, and pay for, DIS-arranged housing. The DIS housing department is here to help you find the best possible housing match, and to help you maintain healthy relations with your hosts and neighbors during your time at DIS. All housing options, host families and roommates are vetted by DIS, with many roommates being former host family members. Please look carefully at every housing option before you decide which one is best for you. Housing options should suit individual students, therefore, unless otherwise required by your home institution, you can choose among the following DIS arranged housing options:
Host Family | Danish Roommate | Folkehøjskole | Kollegium | Shared Housing
The table below explains the basics offered by each option:
| Host Family | Danish Roommate | Kollegium | Folkehøjskole | Shared DIS Housing | |

** DIS will offer you a partial food stipend of $600. All meals are included in the Danish Family stay whereas students choosing the Kollegium, Danish Roommate and Shared Housing receive a US$600 food stipend for the semester. This amount is not intended to cover your full food costs, simply to help out a bit.
Guaranteed Housing
DIS does its best to accommodate your first preference of DIS-arranged housing. However, available space sometimes dictates that you are placed in an alternative housing preference, so apply as soon as you are accepted.
As mentioned above, DIS guarantees housing to all students who request (and have paid for) DIS-arranged housing. The deadline for requesting DIS housing is one month before the arrival date. However, please do not wait until the last minute to submit the online registration “My Housing” form, because housing placements are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Any changes taking place after the deadline will result in a $100 fee plus any additional direct costs.
Finalization of Housing
Around 10 days prior to arrival, you will receive the housing placement and the exact address. DIS puts a lot of effort in making the right housing match for you. This is why it is extremely important that you provide correct and detailed information on the online registration “My Housing” form, as early as possible.
If you choose the Family or the Danish Roommate stay as one of your priorities, you must write letters to the housing coordinator and hosts. Please write honestly and carefully when providing the requested letters. This is the only way you can be matched with a compatible family or Danish Roommate!
Order a Cell Phone Before Arrival!
Most of our housing options do NOT provide a landline telephone. DIS recommends that you order a cell phone with a Danish SIM card for your stay. DIS will send you an e-mail no later than three weeks prior to departure with full details allowing you to sign up for a free cell phone. Read about Cell phone services.
Housing Options for Summer Students
Please note that Kollegium and Shared Housing are the only options offered by DIS in the summer. From past student experience, we believe this option provides the best summer stay. Please visit Housing Options (Summer) for more information.
Arrival Day Information
Housing & Student Services will be available for you on arrival day, where you will receive information and an arrival bag with answers to, hopefully, all of the questions you might have.
We look forward to welcoming you to DIS and Copenhagen.
