Arrival Workshop Study Abroad Introduction

When you arrive in Denmark, it is important to get an immediate feel for your new home and to find out what to expect of the coming semester. DIS has an exciting and different arrival workshop for students, including a scavenger hunt around the streets of Copenhagen and an Immerse Yourself Fair, where students can join a range of organizations in and around Copenhagen. Here’s a taste of what’s on offer when you arrive:

Arrival day

DIS staff will greet you at Copenhagen Airport (all pre-2pm arrivals) and take you to a designated registration site where you will be picked up by your future host family, roommate or, for kollegiums, Social & Residential Advisors.

Survival Danish

To make the transition into Danish society easy all students take a crash course where they learn some very basic Danish and are taught how to use public transport, how to buy groceries in Danish and learn a little about living in Denmark.

Scavenger Hunt

New students are introduced to the city of Copenhagen through a scavenger hunt that combines sightseeing and learning a bit of Copenhagen history with getting to know the city as the locals know it. It’s all done in small groups, something which allows you to get to know your new friends and fellow students.

Housing Workshop

To prepare you for life with the Danes students are invited to a housing workshop where they learn about cultural and social differences, so that the transition into Danish living becomes easier. Students are also introduced to practical matters such as banking and insurance.

Immerse Yourself Fair

Studying abroad is not just about taking academic classes but also about learning the nitty-gritty of a foreign culture. DIS stresses that all new students get a chance to immerse themselves. It is however also stressed that it takes more than just being there. You are required to make an effort if they want to meet the Danes and at the Immerse Yourself Fair you will get a head start.

More than 40 organizations, covering religious communities, sports clubs, LGBTQ groups, and so forth, are invited to take part in the fair and they are all very interested in you taking part in the local community.

Social and Cultural events

To complement the Arrival Workshop DIS arranges a number of social and cultural events during the first couple of weeks you are in Copenhagen. These events include a trip to IKEA, a variety of excursions and a party to which you are invited and where you get a chance to meet young Danes from the Buddy Network.
