Sports in Copenhagen Strong Body, Healthy Mind!

Athletics play a large part in the Danish lifestyle, and Danes constantly seem to be walking, running or biking. DIS is in contact with a variety of sports clubs across the greater Copenhagen area, and you have numerous opportunities to become involved. While most Danes speak nearly perfect English, not all of the instructions will be in English. Your teammates will, however, be sympathetic if you are unable to understand instructions and will be able to translate the most important instructions, so communication should not be a problem!

Joining a team can be a great way to improve your Danish and meet new people.

Some cultural differences

Sports in Denmark operate differently than college sports in the States. It should first and foremost be noted that intramural sports do not exist in Denmark. Universities do not have teams, so clubs function independently. In any given club, you can have members ranging in age from five to... pretty old, and you are placed on a team according to your age and skill level. Most clubs are also arranged by where you live, so unlike the States, it is uncommon to drive huge distances in order to participate in local Danish athletics. The clubs often function as social as well as athletic organizations.

Getting Started

During the Arrival Workshop you are invited to the Activities and Immersion Fair. Here you can meet representatives from an array of sports clubs.
