This course is meant to prepare students for the study tour to Auschwitz. It aims to provide the students with a general overview of the concentration camps, the Nazi genocidal policies, and the specific history of the Auschwitz camps, as well as introducing them to the peculiar role of Auschwitz in post-war history.
The Assignment:
During the trip, students will write entries in a log-book. These entries will provide the basis for the exam, since students are to discuss certain pre-described issues and themes in their log-books. Among the themes to be discussed are the general history of the camp(s), the living conditions, the various prisoner groups, the prisoner self-administration, the extermination facilities, the role and behavior of the SS, the camp as a museum, and the role of the camp in post-war history.
