Based on readings and student experiences at their practicum sites, this seminar examines practices around the terms ethnic diversity, the good childhood, ethnicity and multiculturalism in Danish culture, education and social policy. Cultural and educational issues such as teaching practices, intercultural communication and learning, multilingualism, the influence of culture on education, and Nordic philosophies on nature and play will be thoroughly examined.
In a globalized world, the concept of multiculturalism in relation to children and families is highly dependent on the community context. In order to understand the challenges Denmark faces with an influx of immigrants, students deeply investigate the concept of a ‘Nordic childhood’ and how these pedagogical foundations are challenged by outside points of view.
Although this course will employ educational and psychological perspectives, students will also be required to approach topics from sociological, cultural, and anthropological standpoints.
