Children with Special Needs

Fall & Spring | 3 credits | Core course | Study Tour: Western Denmark (Special Needs) | Stockholm & Tallinn (Special Needs)
Majors: Child Development and Education

This course provides a sociocultural lens through which to study children and families with special needs and settings for their support while considering the impact of inclusive education and related government policy. The seminar examines the cultural dilemmas of working with children who may have diagnoses while also recognizing and supporting the child’s perspective on the good life, the right to play, friendship and learning.

From a Nordic perspective, the concept of ‘special needs’ is examined through issues of inclusion, quality of life, and outside relationships. While this course does focus on ‘special needs’ in a broad sense, it does not look at various diagnoses, or educational/psychological techniques employed for specific disorders.

If you are interested in learning more about special needs from an educational/psychological perspective, we suggest that you consider taking the elective course Developmental Disorders.
