European Art of the 19th Century: From Classicism to Symbolism

Majors: Art History

A critical examination of key art movements, focusing on a contextual analysis of selected paintings and sculptures by major artists of the period (Manet, Gauguin, Munch) and tracing the evolution and the impact of modernity in a European context. Through visits to museums and galleries in Copenhagen, students will learn to identify and critically analyze key works, signifi cant artists, and main styles of the 19th century.

Field Studies

Copenhagen Museums
As a part of this course, students will visit several of Copenhagen's best art museums including: Ny Calsberg Glyptotek, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Odrupgaard, Thorvaldsens Museum, and the Statens Museum for Kunst. Students will use these vast collections of art to understand how 19th Century European Art developed and its relationship to Danish culture and lifestyle.

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

As one of Denmark's best known museums, Louisiana is a perfect space to experience both the permanent collection of art, including pieces by Picasso, Warhol, and Keifer,  and also the contemporary exhibitions of the most influential European art. The museum was created to be a full experience of landscape, architecture, and art, and it is located on beautiful grounds overlooking the Øresund waters a short train ride outside Copenhagen. Students in this course will go to the museum together, using it as a tool to understand how 19th Century European art developed and is influential today.
