European Art of the 20th Century: From Expressionism to Post-War Art

This course offers a study of leading modern artists (Picasso, Matisse, Kandinsky), focusing on a comparative analysis of styles/movements based on individual works of art, and placing stylistic expressions in the socio-political and broad cultural development in Europe during the early 20th century. The course includes visits to Copenhagen museums and galleries

Field Studies

Copenhagen Museums
As a part of this course, students will visit several of Copenhagen's best art museums, using their visits as tools to understand the development of 20th century art. Museum visits will include: Arken Museum of Modern Art, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and Statens Museum for Kunst.

Arken Museum of Modern Art

Arken has a vast collection of modern and contemporary pieces, mainly from Denmark and Scandinavia, but it also includes many international works. Because Arken's creators seek to challenge the visitor, the the art usually focuses on the themes of the experience of the modern human being and the role of art in the contemporary world.Students who visit this museum will experience how art of the 20th century became extremely self-reflective, exploring new mediums and purposes for art.
