Clinical Psychology Practicum

Fall & Spring | 3 credits | Elective
Majors: Anthropology, Psychology, Public Health, and Sociology

A companion course for students enrolled in European Clinical Psychology to explore how aspects, theories and methods of clinical psychology are mirrored in Danish mental health settings. Students are placed in various mental health facilities within Copenhagen, including support services which target core groups of isolated, reclusive people. Students will make observations at the practicum site about activities, routines, and behaviors: Do the practices observed and engaged in represent the seminar themes and theories?

The sites span across homeless shelters, employment outreach programs, and social cafés. Each organization uses various forms of social and group psychology to provide support services to people in need. The volunteer positions entail that students will be a part of the daily routines at each organization – engaging in experiential learning activities, which can build, broaden and deepen intercultural skills, knowledge of Danish culture and reflections on the course curriculum.

Please note:  Students are required to individually arrange their practicum times outside their DIS course schedules.  Please see the syllabus for more information.

I learned tolerance and acceptance of all types of people, regardless of whether or not they function like others around them. I truly enjoyed getting to know the users of the center, and found them to be inspiring, joyful, and fun to talk to.

My favorite part was attending the Christmas party at the SKC. I had a great time, and I loved making Danish Christmas crafts and singing Christmas carols with the users. It was an uplifting and memorable evening that I will remember for many years to come.

Please Note:

As part of this practicum course, you will work directly with people at risk. Danish law requires that any individuals who work in this area must obtain "criminal clearance" from state or local authorities prior to leaving the United States (or your country of citizenship). You are responsible for arranging the clearance and obtaining a copy of your background check showing a clear criminal history from your local police station and then bringing it with you to Copenhagen.
