European Trends in Communication

Fall & Spring | 3 credits | Core course | Study Tour: Western Denmark and | London
Majors: Communication, Journalism, and Media Studies

The core course offers an introduction to the field of communication in Denmark and Europe. Through field trips, case studies, guest lectures and study tours, students gain first-hand knowledge of how professionals work in a Danish and European context: from PR and strategic communication to targeting trends and political spin.

How do PR firms work with clients to communicate effectively? What are the challenges faced in issues management when working toward successful communication in a European context? An emphasis is put on Danish case studies and direct student-client relations to prepare students for communications tasks in the real world.

The course also gives a brief introduction to the Danish media landscape that will provide an understanding of the functions of the field of communication in Denmark and Europe.

To complement the focus of the course on European communication and media, the course integrates a long study tour to London. Past site visits have included lectures from prominent  names in media at the London School of Economics to visits to BBC and the Guardian.  Cultural activities have included visits to the Tate Modern, Short & Sweet Documentary Films, and the Tower of London.
