History of Copenhagen: Structure, Plan, Design

Fall & Spring | 3 credits | Elective
Majors: History, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Urban Studies

The course asks a simple question: Why does Copenhagen look the way it does? – and then takes you through the many stages of the city’s urban development from the Middle Ages to the immediate future. Along the way it introduces you to the elements of European intellectual, artistic, political, economic, social, military and planning history that have influenced urban development over time. The course is very experiential, getting you out of the classroom and into the city for a variety of assignments and field studies. In the end, you will be able to “read” not just Copenhagen, but any bigger European city.

Reading the City

Students in this course will have three assignments throughout the semester that apply the concepts from the class to the real, pulsating city of Copenhagen. Using old and new maps, photographs, and knowledge of urban planning and architecture, students will be able to identify major urban developments that mark many European cities, in addition to those that are specific to Copenhagen.
