This course is an examination of human rights and the laws of armed conflict and how they apply to contemporary conflicts. The course seeks its inspiration in current events, and aims at enabling students to analyze events such as Somalian piracy, the killing of Osama Bin Laden, and armed conflicts in Libya and Afghanistan in a legal context. It seeks to provide students with a thorough understanding of the legal aspects that regulate modern conflicts and how they interact with the political environment. In addition, the course examines the civil wars of former Yugoslavia as a case study to prepare for the study tour to the Balkans.
Prerequisites
A course in international relations or human rights at university level.
