This course focuses on Graphic Design in the context of the built environment. It aims to develop design skills through analysis of Northern European graphic case studies combined with design assignments in visual identity, branding and signage within the built environment and within the context of Danish design culture. Students will work in analog and digital media and further their verbal and visual communication skills.
Studio groups combine students of different standing and background such as Graphic Design, Communication, Architecture, Urban Design, and Interior Architecture. The course is taught vertically, and expectations relate to each individual student. Full-year students can continue Information Design Studio in spring, or they may switch to a different studio or foundations studio (consult prerequisites for experience in spatial design).
Prerequisites
Enrollment in a professional school or department of graphic design or communication design at the junior, senior, or graduate level, and completion of a minimum of two graphic design related studios prior to arrival at DIS. Basic knowledge of one or more programs in the Adobe Suite.
Students should bring examples of their work in a portfolio to be submitted to their studio instructors at the beginning of semester. This will allow the professors to become acquainted with the design skills of each student. The portfolio should contain:
- A one-page resume (short and precise) listing all studios, courses, assignments, and other relevant material, beginning with the most recent information. Clearly state current year/position in school. Briefly state expectations of study at DIS.
- Approximately 3 pages of project illustrations from one or several projects done in studio (or independently if relevant), accompanied by a short description.
The portfolio must be submitted as a digital PDF or hard copy. The pages should be formatted to A4 size (210mmx297mm) or US-Letter size (8.5"x11").
