Sustainability
The course will focus on sustainable strategies and how to make them an integrated part of the design process. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to tools and a work flow that can be applied in order to achieve sustainable solutions.
During the course there will be an ongoing discussion about energy and the often overlooked topic of water efficiency and how it relates to energy and sustainability issues.
The course will cover orientation and siting, the collection of relevant climate data, and an introduction to Ecotect software. Passive and active design strategies, building envelope issues, mechanical heating and cooling systems, indoor environmental quality and day-lighting are also introduced in the course, as are Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Ecological Footprint and existing frameworks
The Real-life assignment. Throughout the semester students will work on a real-world case presented by a client. The client and a local engineering consultant will participate in the classes and comment on the students’ ideas and problem solving assumptions. The assignment is focused on indoor environmental problems and does not require previous design experience. The goal is that the students acquire hands-on experience and practice interaction with clients and consultants.
