International Reporting

Fall & Spring | 3 credits | Elective
Majors: Communication, Journalism, and Media Studies

What does it take to be an international reporter? Learn how to effectively produce international content for an American audience. In this hands-on practical course, students will learn how journalism functions through an intercultural lens by being part of an international news source. Check it out at dispatch.dis.dk.

The course begins with a short intensive reporting workshop where students will develop a clear understanding of the fundamentals related to interviewing, journalistic ethics, cultural sensitivity and print vs. web writing. After the workshop, you will have the unique opportunity to put your knowledge into practice and spend the semester as both a published international reporter and editor for The Dispatch. The class will work as a staff to produce The Dispatch, an online news publication affiliated with DIS (dispatch.dis.dk).

International Reporting is open to students with or without a background in journalism.

Field Studies

Practicum
Strong emphasis is set on the practicum element of creating, organizing and updating The Dispatch, an online publication for an American audience.
Historical Media Walk
Tour Copenhagen and see media sites linked to WWII, the Muhammad Cartoon Crisis and other scandals and fraud. The evening concludes at Berlingske Media where students will watch the journalists at B.T. scurry about to meet their production deadline.

I really like this class because the content for The Dispatch is entirely up to us. At home, I am required to write maybe four articles a semester that get published in the print edition of my college newspaper. But here, we write all the time and in new styles I haven’t studied before. I will publish over eight before I leave and the whole world will see them!
