Kierkegaard's Authorship

Fall & Spring | 3 credits | Elective
Majors: Literature, Philosophy, and Religious Studies

This course is particularly concerned with Kierkegaard’s theory of individual personhood. After a short historical introduction to Kierkegaard, we will look at some of his earliest works, which focus on the tension between the individual and community. We will read parts of The Concept of Irony and Either/Or, and we will read Fear and Trembling in its entirety. We will conclude with an examination of one of his late pseudonymous works, Sickness unto Death, as well as some of his signed works.

This is a University of Copenhagen course open to DIS students. Please ensure you read the full details on taking external courses through DIS.

The European Humanities program offered me the two most rewarding classes I've ever taken, Kierkegaard and existentialism - they were experiences that have changed my life. As an American philosophy student, my background was largely in analytic philosophy. But, through the program, I was able to discover new territory and find the field I want to pursue in grad school. On top of all that, the field study to Berlin and Prague showed me two gorgeous European cities while getting below the surface to their deep underlying histories.
