Meaning of Style, The

Fall & Spring | 3 credits | Elective
Majors: Design and History

People always wore garments as shelter against the elements, but as history progressed, these garments became loaded with new meaning. Today fashion is essential in the creation of identity. We use dress to express our individuality or to fit in. All sub-cultures have specfic looks, special occassions require a certain type of dress, and the media is always chasing the latest trend. Fashion has simply become a multi-billion dollar industry.

Over the past decades Copenhagen has been branded as Scandinavia's fashion capital and fashion has grown into the fourth largest export industry in Denmark.

In the course of the semester, we will explore the world of fashion and the way dress can be interpreted. This will be done through a lecture series discussion on the cultural history of fashion (c. 1500-2011), and the place of fashion in today's world, complimented by a series of field studies to leading Danish fashion companies, designers, and museums. Join us as we explore the ever-changing world of fashion.
