As the Danish Muhammad cartoon controversy and European clashes over the Muslim female headscarf have shown, the question of Islam’s integration into the West is still a hotbed of cultural and political dispute. This course will introduce you to the nature and role of Islam in the West, and provide you with both hands-on and theoretical tools to analyze such disputes.
Field Studies
DIA Skolen: Visit a Muslim private school in Copenhagen’s neighborhood of Nørrebro and have the chance to interact with some of the older students.
DIT Mosque: Visit a mosque which played a central role in the Muhammad cartoon crisis.
Guest Lecture:
Danish Imam Abdul Wahid Petersen is a convert to Islam. He will talk about his way to Islam, his work for establishing Islam in Denmark, and his work for preventing radicalisation as well as facilitating co-existence.
