This seminar aims to enhance cross-cultural understanding through analysis and reflection on community-based volunteering experiences in Copenhagen. This is an interdisciplinary course, weaving together strands from the fields of anthropology, psychology, communication, ethics, and philosophy. The in-class learning will consist of group work and discussions and reflections, whereas the out-of-classroom learning will consist of student volunteering in the local community and field studies. The goal for the student is to gain better insight into him/herself, become cross-culturally aware and competent, and to understand the motives behind civic engagement in Denmark and the US.
By volunteering in Denmark you choose to engage yourself in the local Danish community in a meaningful and socially productive way. This is a once-in-a-lifetime study abroad opportunity that you will benefit from immensely.
Expect:
- A chance for you to service others in a meaningful manner both to you and those you service
- A chance to immerse yourself in a foreign environment, get to know more Danes, and learn more about Danish culture
- To develop your intercultural awareness and competencies – especially as you might not always know the language used
- Resumé and competence building in an international environment
- To dedicate your time, at least 45-55 hrs per semester (3-5 hrs per week), from the day you sign up until the end of your stay
- That the organizations you will work with are dependent on your continuous commitment. Only sign up if you are willing to make this effort while balancing your academic and social life
- That although DIS and most of the organizations are centrally located, your housing may be further away, so you are likely to be commuting more than you are used to
