Objectives

  • Understand the architectural, cultural and political context of Voralberg, Austria
  • Identify and analyze how traditional wood construction is being transformed into contemporary architecture with energy awareness
  • Develop an understanding of the sustainable movement and in particular the passive house movement

Previous Activities Have Included

  • Exploration of a passive house, which is a building that obtains a good indoor climate with an extremely low energy consumption
  • Hike in the Biosparenpark Grobes Walsertal
  • Visit to Berhtold Holzbau Wood Factory, Energieinstitut Vorarlberg and Dietrich Untertrifaller Architecture Firm

Description

Explore the emergence and progress of sustainability in the western Austrian state of Vorarlberg, a region at the absolute forefront of sustainable design for the last decade. With an understanding of the political context and the foundation of design you will survey a variety of buildings and communities, and visit design and municipal offices. On-site analyses will focus on the historical roots and current development of sustainable initiatives.
