Objectives

  • Better understand Vienna's significance in the historical development of western European music
  • Experience present day musical life in Vienna by attending symphony concerts, chamber music concerts, and the opera and actively participating in pre- and post-performance discussions.
  • Familiarize yourselves with Viennese culture – past and present
  • Become acquainted with the leading Viennese composers and their masterpieces

Previous Activities Have Included

  • A visit to Mozart's apartment
  • An opera performance at the Vienna State Opera House, one of the premier opera houses in the world
  • City walks following the paths of important composers as well as focusing on the historical development of Vienna
  • A visit to the famous the Musikverein

Description

Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler, and Schönberg – luminaries of European classical music – all lived and worked in Vienna. Through an introduction to the basic forms of classical music, a more thorough analysis of the leading composer’s masterworks and a historical overview, you will understand why Vienna fostered so many great composers as well as appreciate their music.
