Program Study Tours
Each DIS program is defined by a core course and a short tour in Denmark and a longer tour to a European destination relevant to the core course content. Participation in these tours is required. Study Tours are integrated into specific courses, meaning you must enroll in that course to go on a specific tour.
Please note: As study tours at DIS are dynamic, the listed examples of activities are merely to give you an idea of what you might do on a study tour, and may change due to availability and other circumstances.

Architecture & Design
A three day program-integrated study tour to:

Sweden-Finland | Germany-NetherlandsArchitecture and Design study tours explore and engage topics of adaptive reuse, critical regionalism, and functionalism in northern European Architecture. Expanding on the “city as your classroom” philosophy, students examine the sites visited as architectural case studies for studio projects, in-field exercises for journal courses, and living examples of theory and history. Students return from tours with a personal knowledge of the region’s built environment, customs, and people.

Biomedicine

Edinburgh (Fall) | London (Spring)These program study tours bring students face to face with science in real-life working environments. Studying in Denmark, a world leader in biomedicine and biotechnology, gives students the knowledge and experience to witness and compare biomedical research and industry in other parts of Europe. By visiting labs and companies, universities, as well as cultural must-sees, students will experience the different aspects of biomedicine and biotechnology and can use this knowledge in future decision making about research and career choices.

Child Diversity & Development

andA week-long program-integrated tour to:
Istanbul (Multicultural Context) | Stockholm & Tallinn (Special Needs)For both core courses, students will investigate the link between theory and practice. They will examine the concepts of 'best practice' professionally and policially through either a special needs or multicultural lens.
Whether it is exploring the various ethnic streets of Istanbul, or visiting schools in Stockholm or Tallinn with a Scandinavian philosophy of inclusion, students will experience first-hand the issues and topics discussed in their courses.

LondonExperience the unique cultural vibe of Europe’s media capital, London. Activities include visits to media institutions (such as a major newspaper headquarters), PR firms, post production agencies, web specialists as well as lectures with leading scholars.

Germany | France | Czech RepublicEach section of the European Memory and Identity class will take a 3-day trip to Western Denmark, visiting cities and sites that are central to Danish contemporary life, culture and history. The long study tour to Germany, France or the Czech Republic, further explores how history and culture have shaped the current concept of identity in these respective cities and nations. The aim is to be an active traveler and examine the destinations within the conceptual framework provided.

BrusselsThe European Politics program is designed for students majoring in political science, international studies, international relations, government, or related fields.
The core course and study tours will equip you with solid knowledge of the European Union (EU), including its institutions, governance and major policy areas. Further, the program will develop your understanding of current political issues, policies and politicking, and provide theoretical and hands-on insights into the processes that shape European politics.

Global Economics

BrusselsBoth the short and long study tours are designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of globalization by visiting the institutions, organizations and policy actors that influence the global marketplace, foreign investment and international aid. The short tour to Western Denmark will examine Danish organizations and companies that participate in developing and emerging markets. In Brussels, students will examine the capital of the European Union (EU) and receive the opportunity to visit EU government institutions, lobbying groups and other organizations that participate in the global economy.

International Business

Berlin-Prague | London | Paris (from Fall 2012)These program study tours immerse students in the European business environment by allowing students the opportunity to visit some of the world’s largest corporations and banks in Europe. Each tour focuses on giving students the tools to critically examine individual corporate strategies and complete a comprehensive industry analysis. The short study tour will focus on the Danish approach to business while the longer study tours will expose students to the operations of large multinational with locations throughout the world and provide an opportunity to evaluate regional shifts in strategy.

The BalkansThe Justice and Human Rights program is designed for pre-law students majoring in law/pre-law, political science, international studies, human rights or related fields.
The core course and study tours will provide you with a thorough understanding of the legal aspects and political context behind major human rights violations in Europe. -
Medical Practice & Policy
A three day program-integrated study tour to:

Berlin-Poznan | Stockholm-Tallinn | Vienna-BudapestThese program study tours offer students the opportunity to see the various health care systems of Europe up close. Whether it is in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Estonia, Hungary, Austria, or Poland, these tours will take students through the differences and similarities, benefits and downfalls of European medicine. The MPP tour exposes students to major university hospitals, as well as volunteer clinics, rehabilitation centers, and research centers, in order to enhance their understanding of clinical practice. Students will have the opportunity to interact with doctors, medical students, and researchers.

TurkeyTurkey: Istanbul has an intriguing history, being the center for both Christian and Muslim Empires for hundreds of years. Now it is a buzzing metropolitan city literally on the border between the East and the West. The study tour will include lectures, NGO visits, visits with minorities, cultural visits and a roundtable discussion with local students.

Vienna (European Clinical Psychology) | Milan (Positive Psychology) | Scotland (Positive Psychology) | Madrid (Positive Psychology)All tours explore the areas of psychology in relation to implementation at the policy, institutional, and individual levels. Students will examine research and discuss related issues in a global context. The Western Denmark short tours build a foundation from which to see psychology in a Danish perspective, and will work to understand the field within historical, social, political, and economic contexts. They will then apply this knowledge to view the field from several different European perspectives.
The focus of each tour is determined by the core course subject - either Positive Psychology, or European Clinical Psychology

Tallinn-Helsinki | Riga-HelsinkiThe Public Health study tours will connect classroom learning with real life experiences of the historical, social, economic, and political aspects of different national health care systems. Whether it is in Western Denmark; Tallinn, Estonia; Riga, Latvia; or Helsinki, Finland; you will experience the national health care systems of Scandinavian countries and a post-Communist country through visits to primary care centers, policy-making institutions, and community health interest groups.

Science & the Environment

GreenlandThe Science & the Environment program allows you to explore climate change and other environmental issues by learning from climate history. You will develop deeper knowledge of climate change theory, and you will also examine how civilization has played a critical role in creating the world we live on today.
Note: This program will be offered starting fall 2012.

United Kingdom | The Netherlands | Sweden (Fall 2012) | GermanyThe study tours in this program are designed to give a greater understanding of sustainability from a Danish and an European context through a mixture of visits to research centers, companies and NGOs. Students should be able to identify the motivations of various stakeholders and gain a greater insight into the role of communities, governments, and businesses in creating and implementing technology and standards for sustainable communities and lifestyles. The tour to Western Denmark will focus on the Danish model of sustainable communities and the longer study tour will focus on the research and innovation in green policy and technology.
