A three day program-integrated study tour to Western Denmark. Core course(s) with this study tour:

Objectives

  • Examine biotechnology-based methods for diagnosis and treatment of disease
  • Gain insight into the transfer of technology and knowledge from university-based research units to the biotech business

Previous Activities Have Included

  • Visit with Dr. Jesper Wengel, co-inventor of locked nucleic acid (LNA) at University of Southern Denmark
  • Presentation at Østjysk Innovation, a Danish innovation incubator that undertakes the transfer of new technology from the research institution to commerce and industry
  • Visit the Medical Biotechnology Center at Syddansk Universitet and get an introduction to pattern recognition receptors on the innate immune system and their roles in diverse disease states

Description

This study tour provides you with the opportunity to explore the research field of biomedicine and biotechnology in Denmark, while furthering your understanding of the transfer of biomedical research to the business aspect of biotechnology.  On this tour, you will also be able to investigate the dynamics of drug discovery and gain insight into biotechnology-based methods for diagnosis and treatment of disease.  Academic visits on tour could include meeting with world-renowned biomedical researchers and research centers, visiting with biotechnology venture capitalists, as well as gaining insight in the field by meeting with a start-up biomedical company. 

In addition to the academic activities on study tour, the study tour program is supplemented with cultural visits to relevant and exciting sites and events to help engaged students to the fullest extent.  In the past, cultural visits have included staying at a Danish boarding school, touring castles, and experiencing traditional Danish food.
