A three day program-integrated study tour to Danish Border Regions. Core course(s) with this study tour: European Memory and Identity

Objectives

  • To provide insights into Danish history, culture, contemporary life, and institutions while using the conceptual framework of memory and identity.
  • To understand memory and identity in a European context, providing important points of reference and comparison between the histories and cultures of Denmark and France, Germany or the Czech Republic that will be further explored in class and on the long study tour.

Previous Activities Have Included

  • Workshop and social with Danish students
  • Visit to a Danish open prison
  • Overnight stay in Hamburg
  • Visits to regional memory sites (memorials, museums, art installations)

Description

Each section of the European Memory and Identity class will spend their short study break visiting the border regions Denmark shares with Sweden and Germany, visiting cities and sites that are central to the development of Danish identity and the intersection of these disparate regional cultures. The long study tour to Germany, France, or the Czech Republic further explores how memory sites shape national identities in these respective cities and nations.
