Objectives
- To facilitate experiential learning through academic and cultural visits.
- To provide spotlight insights into Danish history, culture, modern life.
- To allow the Justice and Human Rights students to get to know each other better
- To gain knowledge about Danish military capabilities, involvement, position on the conflict areas
Previous Activities Have Included
- A visit to the Navy Military Police: Students learned about piracy in Aden bay, practical and legal issues and problems detaining pirates and experiences from the field
- A visit to Århus University where DIS students sit in on a lecture focusing on“Human Rights and International Relations.” DIS students interact with Danish students through discussion and dinner.
- A guided tour of the Utzon Center. Sydney has its world-famous opera house on the waterfront designed by Jørn Utzon. Now, Aalborg has its own waterfront masterpiece designed by Utzon. Aalborg is redefining its cultural identity through outstanding architecture and the redevelopment of the harbor front.
- A meeting with Major Ole Bech Kristensen in which students learn about the role of military police in armed conflict, including criminal investigation and detainee operations.
Description
The War Crimes and Human Rights core class of the Justice and Human Rights Program travels to Northern Denmark in order to gain perspective on the role of Denmark’s military and navy in a global context. Students have the opportunity to meet with military officers, and they engage in academic conversations with those in the field as well as students at a Danish university regarding conflict and resolution. Students will gain greater knowledge and understanding of the complex issues surrounding conflict, such as national identity, the status quo, and the relationship between international human rights law national law.
