A week-long tour to Tallinn-Helsinki. Core course(s) with this study tour: Health Delivery and Prioritization In Northern Europe

Objectives

  • Compare and contrast the role, function, and organization of the health care systems of Scandinavian countries, Denmark and Finland, with the health care system of post-communist Estonia
  • Observe the challenges Europe faces in relation to health care due to rising costs, aging populations, immigration, etc.

  • Visit to the Estonian Health Foundation
  • Tours of Estonian and Finnish family health centers
  • Visit to Institute for Health and Welfare in Helsinki
  • Visit to the Estonian Sexual Health Association

Description

The study tour should equip you with hands-on knowledge of the health care systems in Northern Europe, while furthering your understanding of the salient aspects of public health. As a student on this tour, you will also be able to derive comparative insight from the analysis of different national health care systems. Academic visits on the tour could include meeting with general practitioners, visiting policy-making institutions, as well as meeting with interest groups that focus on community public health.

In addition to the academic activities, the study tour program is supplemented with cultural visits to relevant and exciting sites and events to help engaged students to the fullest extent.  In the past, cultural visits have included a city walking tour, philharmonic orchestra performance, contemporary art museum, and Finnish sauna.
